What is a city ranch, anyway?

It’s simple, really… my city ranch is the ranch-style bungalow I’m renovating in the middle of the city. A ranch-style home has some distinct features, including but not limited to: single story with long, low roofline; asymmetrical rectangular, L-shaped, or U-shaped design; simple floor plans and trim; and large windows. These houses experienced a popularity surge from the 1940s – 1960s (this style of house was perfect for the modern aesthetic of the time), but have always been subject to criticism (too sterile, too utilitarian, too common).

As for our particular ranch house in the city, it’s a 1959 U-shaped floor plan and I am quite excited to modernize it with many hints of its vintage appeal.
