Settling In

Now that we’ve been living in the house for two weeks, I’ve really started to get an idea about how much I like this new place. There is still a long way to go, but we are getting there slowly; I need to keep reminding myself that as an only parent of two young(-ish) children, certain things take priority. So while our basement still needs to be unpacked and reorganized and the garage and yard need to be organized, I’m not terribly stressed about it – it will all happen in time (there is only so much a person can do in a day).

One of my favourite things about being in the house is that it felt like home immediately – even in the state of mess with a layer of drywall dust over everything in the basement, it was comfortable and inviting, and I love that. The kids have both settled in nicely and are loving all the details that they chose for the house. I am also absolutely delighted with the proximity to the school… walking to school was not ever something I did in my life before, but I’m so grateful to be able to give that opportunity to my children; it certainly, to this short point in time, anyway, seems to make life a little easier. And while part of this is likely pure conjecture on my part, the neighbourhood definitely has a different feel than our old place in the ‘burbs. Everyone seems more open and friendly here, and so many people have stopped by the house just to say hello and drop off little welcoming presents – which is not at all necessary, but I’ve always loved having people unexpectedly drop in to say hello, and that really never happened when we lived way out on the edge of the city. So while the move itself has been a continuing tedious process, the end results make it completely worthwhile.
