Garden & Garage

The recent lovely weather has the girls asking for bike rides, and I couldn’t even get to their bikes, let alone their helmets. I’d been meaning to get around to unpacking it, but there just hasn’t been time yet – this morning’s trip to the greenhouse spurred garage work though, since I can’t transplant anything until I have my garden tools unpacked and in hand.

Love the potting shelf on the side of the garage!

A couple of weeks ago, I cleaned out one side of the garage so I could parkin there; this side has remained cluttered and waiting to be organized

Lulu stands among 5 of the 6 bikes currently in our garage – seems a bit excessive for the 3 of us. Two of the bikes will find new homes by the end of summer (if not sooner).

I'm quite pleased with my bike-hanging project.

Settling In

Now that we’ve been living in the house for two weeks, I’ve really started to get an idea about how much I like this new place. There is still a long way to go, but we are getting there slowly; I need to keep reminding myself that as an only parent of two young(-ish) children, certain things take priority. So while our basement still needs to be unpacked and reorganized and the garage and yard need to be organized, I’m not terribly stressed about it – it will all happen in time (there is only so much a person can do in a day).

One of my favourite things about being in the house is that it felt like home immediately – even in the state of mess with a layer of drywall dust over everything in the basement, it was comfortable and inviting, and I love that. The kids have both settled in nicely and are loving all the details that they chose for the house. I am also absolutely delighted with the proximity to the school… walking to school was not ever something I did in my life before, but I’m so grateful to be able to give that opportunity to my children; it certainly, to this short point in time, anyway, seems to make life a little easier. And while part of this is likely pure conjecture on my part, the neighbourhood definitely has a different feel than our old place in the ‘burbs. Everyone seems more open and friendly here, and so many people have stopped by the house just to say hello and drop off little welcoming presents – which is not at all necessary, but I’ve always loved having people unexpectedly drop in to say hello, and that really never happened when we lived way out on the edge of the city. So while the move itself has been a continuing tedious process, the end results make it completely worthwhile.

Classin’ Up the Joint

We really know how to class things up over here as we prep for the new window to be installed tomorrow morning. Since we don’t have a dumpster anymore, I’ve specifically asked the guys to pile all the garbage on the front lawn before hauling it away later, so I can get a picture of our shanty shack today.

All boarded up – the house is looking so stylish

According to those 'in the know', "they don't make glass like this anymore". Too bad we have no use for the super-thick glass panes taken out of the old window.

I loved that they brought over some insulation and used it to line the window cavity so I wouldn't get cold tonight. So thoughtful.

My favourite part of today was looking in the wine fridge and noticing that the guys put in a bottle of red and a bottle of white – I still have to find all my wine which is packed away somewhere. So thoughtful – have I mentioned how much I love these workers? I will miss them when they are gone!

Working Bee

I got home to a flurry of activity in the house after being out to run some errands this morning. The bathrooms are being finished up – mirrors going into place and my shower door is being installed. The guys are also hard at work leaving a big hole in the wall in preparation for tomorrow’s new living room window install.

Adhesives are in place for the girls' bathroom mirror

I think my shower is perfectly gorgeous

A sheet of poly was put up to keep the breeze to a minimum

Piece by piece, out comes the old window

At 14' x 6-1/2', that is one big window for a little house.

Finishing the kitchen

While we certainly had no complaints about the temporary working kitchen the guys installed for us, it’s been so much better to have our actual finished products going into place.

This fancy suction machine spaces the quartz so they can insert the glue, and then suctions the pieces back together (the countertops were installed on Friday morning)

My tile-setter moved here from Romania 3-1/2 years ago to build a better life for his family. Back there, his wife made the equivalent of $50-$60/month working as a dentist, which she spent years in university for. Here, she can't even work as a dental assistant, so she helps her husband when he needs extra hands. Their story makes me sad, but at the same time, their obvious happiness and work ethic are rather uplifting.

Breakfast in the new house

This seems to be a slow move, with things not getting set up as quickly as usual. Mind you, I’ve never moved with children before, either. Nothing is even unpacked in the kitchen yet, but I wad able to find some plastic glasses to use as cereal bowls for breakfast (no sign of any spoons yet, so leftover forks from dinner last night are being used to spear the Cheerios).

Getting close

We are into the last little push of getting things done before we move in next Monday. Bathroom fixtures are all in place (just waiting on the mirrors, which should be installed tomorrow), the kitchen appliances are being installed (with temporary countertops and a small kitchen sink have being put into place until the real countertops are installed at the end of next week). There are still a few things that we are waiting on that will happen after we move in, but they are minor things that we can certainly live with for a bit.

I’d been going to order the new barstools for the kitchen counter, but as I went online to order them tonight, I discovered the store no longer carries them – foiled again! So now it’s on to hunt for other stools that I like, but there is time for that.

Should have stayed in bed this week…

With things being so close to being done at the house, I am coming up at roadblock after roadblock this week it seems. It’s frustrating and disheartening when I am aching to be in my own space after so much time elsewhere… it will be so very nice to feel settled again (not to mention being able to spread out in a bed all to myself rather than being inadvertently kicked by two little girls all night long).

All the appliances were supposed to be delivered on Monday, but when I went to house that afternoon, there was still no sign of them and no calls indicating when they might come. So I called the appliance company to see what was going on, only to find out that while the order was slated for delivery, it was never loaded onto the truck. Turns out in all my distraction, I forgot that I still owed a (fairly hefty) balance on the order. So while it was my fault, the woman I spoke to did tell me that when a person books delivery, they usually tell you what the balance owing is and that you have to pay it three days ahead of delivery. They didn’t tell me any of that ahead of time, but in all fairness, if I’d really been on the ball, I would have known that myself if I had just checked my files to confirm ahead of time. So I did go in and get everything paid for and sorted out, arranging for delivery Tuesday afternoon. The carpenter working at the house that day finished a bit early, so we called the delivery dispatch and arranged for them to call the production manager to give him a 15-minute warning so he could meet them and let them into the house. So they called him at 3:30, telling him they’d be there soon… off he went to the house, and when they still weren’t there at 4:15, he called them back and found out they were “one minute away”. By 4:30, he called them again and it sounds as thought they were nowhere even close. So, supposedly they were supposed to come to house “first thing this morning” – we shall see if that in fact has come to pass when I go to the house later today.

Also, the production manager let me know yesterday morning that because of the delays in getting the kitchen sink, we won’t have the kitchen countertops until the end of next week. Sigh. While it (sort-of) seemed like a good idea at the time to order some things from a friend to save a few dollars, in the long run, I actually don’t think it was worth the savings when measured against the hassle of trying to track it all down and get it in a timely fashion. If doing it over, I’d certainly be very willing to pay the premium and just have the contractors handle it all. I’ve had no complaints at all with them to date, and it would certainly be worth an extra few dollars to just have them handle it.

So even without the countertops in place, most other things will be done by then and good to go, so the movers are booked and we are moving in on Monday as planned. I think my relief at being there at long last will outweigh the inconvenience of living a few days without countertops – although I may change my tune next week ;)

The Doors

The passage doors have all been hung in the house, and while I did decide to keep and paint out the original hollow-core mahogany doors in the interest of saving some money, I’m quite pleased with how they look and I do quite like the egg-shaped doorknobs I picked out. The new five-panel shaker door on the front closet, however, makes me think that perhaps the rest of the doors will be changed out for similar new ones in the future. The pocket doors and sliding closet doors all still need to be put on, but that will come after they have put all the rods into the closets (most are now in, just a few more need to go up). And the painting is all done now, other than the few touch-ups that will have to be done when all the rest of the workers are done (seems like scuffs happen no matter how carefully one tries to avoid them).

The thin oak veneer panels lining the front staircase have been painted out

All the rest are just details

It’s incredible how the little details coming into place are really making the house look wonderful. I’m almost at the point where I don’t want to go there anymore, since it feels so close to being done that I can hardly stand it – but I will, since I know it will be just what I want when all is said and done.

The built-in china cabinet now has the countertop installed – all it needs now are the 'feet'

The kitchen, dining area and living room have all been painted

The hardwood is all done on all the stairs

The baseboards were installed today – now the bedrooms just need the doors to be rehung

Even though the baseboards still need to be painted out, the white trim makes the pink walls in Izzy's room stand out
